Thanks for sharing this story Hal. It's a great example of how breakdowns are opportunities for breakthroughs. I really love how it shaped your career as trailblazer, and how these early lessons helped you more effectively innovate within large organizations. It's a lesson to all leaders - don't punish your people for innovating, as innovators may inadvertently break glass. Instead, harness that energy in a positive way and create the right space for them to thrive.

Great story, Hal, and one that resonates with personal experience. I've worked for several companies during my career - many profess to be a meritocracy, while in reality fall far short. Sun Microsystems, with Scott at the helm, walked the walk. My current employer follows that same path. An employee that is comfortable knowing their employer has their back doesn't need to preoccupy themselves with the fear they will meet the swinging axe of doom if they make a mistake, and is far more productive working without that fear.

Thank you for sharing this experience Hal. These things shape us and I personally have benefitted from your experience because of the way you lead me. Understanding and accepting the impact that we have on others seems to be a critical component of “abject terror”. We have to care - about our lives (including families), our colleagues, our customers. And clearly you care. Thank you.
